ICSC Regional Workshop on the United Nations Compensation System

Praia, Cape Verde, 23 to 27 April 2018

The International Civil Service Commission held a second Regional Workshop for Africa from 23 to 27 April 2018 in Praia, Cape Verde as the 2017 Regional Workshop in Tanzania was over-subscribed.

The Workshop was intended for staff of the United Nations common system organizations who have operational responsibility for administering the compensation of international staff, including the post adjustment system, mobility and hardship scheme, daily subsistence allowance rates and other allowances and benefits.

Thirty-five participants from 21 African countries and Europe representing 14 different organizations attended the workshop. The participants were international Professional staff, National Officers and senior General Service staff. Based on the feedback received, the participants found the material for the workshop to be comprehensive and relevant to their work. The ICSC constantly strives to improve upon the content and presentation in these workshops.

While in Cape Verde, the ICSC Chairman also met with the country team in Praia to learn about the UN programmes and conditions of life and work in the duty station and brief them about ICSC activities. The Chairman along with a staff member from the secretariat visited the islands of Sao Vicente and Santo Antao where the UN has programmes. During his visit, he was accompanied by staff from UNFPA and UNDP. He met with local officials and visited a regional hospital, child emergency center and local projects.

These workshops provide an important opportunity for the Commission, through its Chair and the secretariat, to interact with staff members in the field and better understand issues of relevance to their conditions of service.
